This design uses triangulation to give maximum strength with minimal structure so as not to detract from whatever is placed on the shelves. The openness of the shelves also ensures that they do not give the impression of eating into room space.

The same concept has been used to strengthen tables and stools eliminating the need for stretchers or a heavy structure at the top.
